I retired at the end of 1993.
Prior to my retirement I owned a rental condo on Longboat Key in Florida. In retirement, it no longer made sense to me as I would only be able to use it two weeks per year and I wanted to be away from St. Louis for a longer period of time.
I traveled extensively in 1994 and came up with a plan to sell my Florida condo and purchase something in the Tetons... my favorite place. I knew I would not be able to afford anything in Jackson, so I contacted a real estate agent (Victoria Springer) in Jackson and arranged for an April visit to look at properties in the area that I could afford.
Victoria told me that there were some new condos being built in Driggs Idaho on the backside of the Tetons. My first question to her was "Where is Driggs?"
I know one is supposed to do a great amount of "due diligence" before purchasing a piece of property. I only looked at one development that day and saw one unit that was complete and furnished. The rest of the property was under construction. The unit I selected was just a concrete ring wall... not a single stick of wood in sight.
But like most things in my life. Things happen that can only be explained as "dumb luck". I often tell folks that I fully intended to spend my days over in GTNP and sleep in Driggs. I then say that if I knew everything that now know and money had not been a primary consideration, Driggs would be my choice over Jackson, hands down.
